Assemblyman Withdraws Proposed CA. Organ Donor Amendment

Assemblyman Withdraws Proposed CA. Organ Donor Amendment

Release Date: 6/4/2004

Sacramento, CA.; (MCNW) Assemblyman John Longville of California says an amendment to force some motorcyclists to be organ donors is unacceptable to him, and he will have it withdrawn.

Longville had introduced AB1200 to allow adults 18 and older to legally ride motorcycles without wearing helmets. California currently has a mandatory helmet law.

Longville told the AMA that this language "is not acceptable to me, nor should it be to anyone else. As soon as I learned of this language, I asked that it be removed from my bill."

The language was slated to be killed during an Assembly Transportation Committee meeting on January 12.

AMA Western States Representative Nick Haris said that while the AMA supported the bill in its original form, the Association couldn't support the measure with the new amendment.
